Double Victory: A Multicultural History of America in World War II Full Description
A history of America in World War II is told through the lives of an ethnically diverse group of ordinary Americans struggling for equality at home and fighting for freedom overseas. Takaki's revealing book shows that there were more struggles--and more victories--during WWII than most people ever imagined. 37 photos. From the Publisher Acclaimed historian Ron Takaki asserts that for many Americans World War II was fought for a double victory : on the battlefront as well as on the homefront. Takaki presents his argument through the stories of extraordinary as well as ordinary Americans caught up in wartime. He explores Roosevelt's military policy, but also investigates the experience of an Army chaplin arriving at Buchenwald. He brings together a broad variety of voices: a Japanese American at an internment camp, a Native American code breaker using the Navajo language for the first time, a Jewish corporal fighting Hitler, and a Mexican-American woman who, as a Rosarita, the riveter , was able to work in jobs other than that of housecleaner and maid. Takaki illustrates how different ethnic groups experienced the war in widely different ways. He claims that such political acts as the bombing of Hiroshima and the refusal by the American Government to admit Jews into the US were deeply informed by racial biases. Takaki's revealing new history shows that there were more struggles -- and victories -- involved in World War II than we had previously imagined. Free Shipping.
