Heirloom Tulip Collection Full Description
There are good reasons why some Tulips transcend the whims of gardening fashion. Our collection contains four of the best heirloom varieties, 25 bulbs of each, labeled. Bright red-and-yellow Keizerskroon is a Single Early Tulip that dates to 1750 but won an Award of Garden Merit from the Royal Horticultural Society as recently as 1993. For fragrance, we include the vibrant orange-and-purple Triumph Tulip Prinses Irene (1949). As a luscious contrast to paler colors, you cant miss with dark purple Black Parrot (introduced in 1937). The interior is so dark, it almost looks black! The newcomer (1953) is the Greigii Tulip 'Plaisir', with carmine-and-cream striped flowers and purple-mottled leaves (and winner of an Award of Garden Merit as well). The very name Tulip is magic, for everyone knows this fine genus. We call these gay flowers the "lipsticks of the garden" because they provide a finishing touch that brings spring borders to life. Many of the species are native to the Mediterranean region, others to places as far east as Japan. From these species, hundreds of years of hybridizing and selection have produced great improvements. Tulip flowers are large and uniform, with variations in color and form that are unrivaled elsewhere in horticulture. The stems of many are as long and graceful as can be, but still strong enough to shrug off North Sea winds near the Dutch coast, where they are grown by the millions.Tulips are happy in any good garden soil, given that it is neither soggy nor solid clay. Full sun is recommended (at least six hours or more). For more information on Tulip care, click GROWING TIPS at left.
