In 1920, Raicho founded the New Women's Association, Japan's first women's organization to campaign for female suffrage.Raicho writes of her youth and her rebellion against the traditional virtues expected of Japanese women. Her memoir is a highly personal account of her life in late nineteenth and early twentieth-century Japanese society, a compelling story of a woman at once idealistic and elitist, fearless and vain, perceptive and brilliant.
