    In early 1945 the Royal Air Force began organising Tiger Force, a massive armada of heavy bombers intended for use in the final offensive against Japan. The centerpiece of Tiger Force was intended to be the new four-engined Avro Lincoln bomber, the product of wartime experience with the earlier Lancaster.

    The abrupt end of the Pacific War prevented the Lincoln from ever being used in its intended role, but it served on for over 20 years as Britain's last piston bomber. The Lincoln saw active service in guerrilla wars in Kenya, Aden and Malaya, and its sturdy frame was the basis for numerous experiments with new engines and armaments. In the long-range maritime patrol role, it had a long career with both Britain and Australia. The original edition of Lincoln at War has been out of print for 20 years and is much sought-after by aviation enthusiasts.
