    On the night of January 30, 1945, a scrappy band of American Rangers and Filipino Scouts raided a notorious Japanese prison camp known as Cabanatuan to liberate incarcerated American soldiers. Facing overwhelming odds, these gallant men vowed to rescue 511 POWs -- and escort the sick and dying prisoners through thirty miles of jungle crowded with Japanese, to safety. They did it -- and they made history. This is their incredible story.

    Author William B. Breuer recounts in searing, meticulous detail -- based largely on interviews with survivors -- the hellish battles of Bataan and Corregidor; the horrors of the Bataan Death March, and the harrowing efforts of guerrilla fighters. He also features the gripping stories of women who helped the cause, such as Margaret Utinsky of "Miss U's underground" and Claire Phillips, glamorous lounge singer-turned-spy.
