Certainly 'Taipei Silk', with its orchid-like blossoms, purple highlighted with lilac and white, deserves better. Blooming from late summer into fall, this particular cultivar demands very little in return -- naturally compact, and upright, 'Taipei Silk' doesn't require the staking demanded by many of its relatives.Natives of east Asian and Himalayan woodlands, the Tricyrtises adapt easily to lightly shaded sites in North America if given a deep and well-watered, organic rich soil. Once they root into a spot, they resent any disturbance, but if left alone are likely to spread gradually into a large colony. Best planted at the edge of a patio or beside a woodland path where the exotic flowers can be admired at your ease.Gardeners seeking plants for shade are always pleased to discover Toad Lilies. Despite their unflattering common name (probably suggested by the spotted blooms), they offer striking flowers and produce them in fall, when most shade gardens could use a point of interest. Tricyrtis make excellent cut flowers (in Japan, they are grown commercially to supply the florists' trade). Plants prefer evenly moist (but not soggy), slightly acid soil, and under those conditions will soon form substantial clumps.
